The short answer: wear fitted, high-rise leggings or shorts, a supportive sports bra or a close-fitting top, and grip socks. Leave anything loose at home, along with zips, buckles and jewellery that can catch on the springs or press into you on the carriage. Bring a light layer for afterwards. That is genuinely all you need.
Reformer Pilates has a very recognisable look, and it is easy to assume you need a matching set and a particular aesthetic before you walk in. You don't. What you wear on the reformer matters for practical reasons, not for how it photographs. Here is what actually makes a difference, from the first class onwards.
What to wear to reformer Pilates: the checklist
- Fitted leggings or shorts with a high rise that stays where you put it.
- A sports bra with low to medium support, ideally with no clasps or hardware at the back.
- A close-fitting top if you want more coverage, one that won't fall over your face when you fold forward.
- Grip socks, which most UK studios ask you to wear.
- Hair tied back and jewellery off.
- A light layer for the walk there and back.
Why fitted clothing matters on the reformer
A reformer is a moving carriage on springs, with a footbar, shoulder rests and straps. During a class you lie down, kneel, sit, lift your legs overhead and put your feet or hands in the straps. That changes what works.
Loose fabric can catch in the springs or the straps, a baggy top slides towards your chin the moment you roll back, and wide shorts gape when your legs are raised. Fitted clothing also lets your instructor see your alignment, which is how you get useful corrections. The aim is not tightness. It is clothing that stays with you, so you can stop thinking about it.
Leggings or shorts?
Both work, as long as they fit close to the body.
Leggings are the default for most people. Look for a high rise that doesn't roll down when you lie on the carriage, fabric that is opaque when you bend and squat, and a length that sits cleanly at the ankle so it doesn't bunch over your grip socks. Our Elevate V-Legging has a crossover V-waist that holds without squeezing, and the Core Flow Legging is a cleaner, second-skin high rise. Both are squat-proof, and our guide to the best leggings for reformer Pilates compares them side by side.
Shorts can work in a warm studio, as long as they are fitted, not floaty: running shorts and loose styles gape as soon as your feet are in the straps. For most classes, though, we would still reach for leggings. They cover your legs against the straps and upholstery, keep you warm between exercises and stay put through bridges and leg work.
Sports bra or top?
Reformer Pilates is low impact, so you don't need the most structured sports bra you own. You need one that stays put when you fold forward, twist and lie on your back. Two details matter more than people expect:
- The neckline. A higher neck keeps you covered when you roll down or bend forward. The Pulse Bra is a high-neck racer made for exactly this.
- The back. Clasps, hooks and thick hardware press into your spine when you lie on the carriage. A smooth, hardware-free back is noticeably more comfortable.
If you would rather have more coverage through the arms and waist, choose a fitted top rather than a loose tee. The Layer Tee sits close to the body, so it won't slide up when you roll back or catch on the springs.
Do you need grip socks for reformer Pilates?
In most UK studios, yes. Grip socks give you traction on the footbar and platform and help with hygiene on shared equipment, so many studios require them and some won't let you train without them. Check your studio's policy before your first class. Many sell them at reception if you forget.
Normal socks tend to slip on the footbar, and bare feet are often not allowed. If you are wearing leggings, an ankle length works best with grip socks, as the fabric sits neatly above them rather than bunching over the top.
What not to wear to reformer Pilates
- Loose T-shirts and joggers. They shift, ride up and hide your alignment.
- Zips, buckles and metal trims. They can scratch the upholstery and press into you on the carriage.
- Jewellery. Rings and bracelets can catch on straps and springs.
- Thin or slippery fabrics. Anything that turns see-through when you bend, or slides on the carriage, will distract you all class.
- Trainers. Reformer is done in grip socks, not shoes.
What to wear to reformer Pilates in winter
Early morning studios in the UK can be cold for the first ten minutes. A cropped long sleeve is the easiest answer: it keeps your arms warm, and a cropped length sits neatly over high-rise leggings, so nothing bunches when you lie back. Thumbholes help keep the sleeves in place when you reach for the straps, which is why we added them to the Athletic Long Sleeve Top.
Bring a warmer layer for the walk home, and take it off before class rather than training in it. Anything bulky gets in the way on the carriage.
After class
This is the part most people forget. You finish a session and then go straight to work, the school gate or a coffee. Pieces that look considered off the reformer save you a change of clothes. That is the thinking behind everything we make, and it is why the Flow Dress, with built-in shorts and pockets, exists: it is for the walk home, not the reformer itself. On warm days, high-waisted cycling shorts and the one-shoulder Edge Bra do the same job.
Frequently asked questions
Can you wear shorts to reformer Pilates?
Yes, as long as they are fitted. Close-fitting, high-rise shorts that stay in place with your legs raised are ideal. Avoid loose running shorts, which gape when your feet are in the straps.
Should Pilates leggings be high-waisted?
A high waist helps. It stays in place when you lie on the carriage, roll down or lift your legs overhead, so you are not adjusting your waistband between exercises.
What should I wear to my first reformer class?
Fitted leggings or shorts, a comfortable sports bra or close-fitting top, and grip socks. You don't need a matching set. Arrive ten minutes early and tell your instructor it is your first class. Our guide to reformer Pilates for beginners covers what to expect.
Can I wear normal socks to reformer Pilates?
Usually not. Normal socks slip on the footbar and platform, and most studios ask for grip socks for traction and hygiene. Check with your studio before you book.
Is reformer Pilates clothing different from yoga clothing?
There is plenty of overlap, since both call for fitted, stretchy pieces. The reformer adds moving parts, straps and a carriage you lie on, so things like a hardware-free back, a waistband that stays put and a fitted leg matter a little more.
The best reformer outfit is the one you stop noticing once class begins. If you want to start with the essentials, our reformer edit brings them together in one place.
